Restriction: Show progress to general or specialist medical registration

National Restrictions Library 2.0: This restriction applies to restictions imposed or accepted from 16 September 2024. For restrictions imposed or accepted before this date please see the National Restrictions Library 1.0.

Restriction description

A practitioner with this restriction must show progress toward achieving either general or specialist registration.
We usually apply this restriction when an internationally qualified medical practitioner has been unable to complete the unrestricted registration requirements within three years of starting practice in Australia.

The practitioner must do one of the following:

  • pass an exam
  • complete a work-based assessment satisfactorily
  • meet the requirements for fellowship with a specialist college.

A practitioner with this restriction also has requirements about the type of registration they hold. This might include practising in approved practice locations under supervision.

When the practitioner applies to renew their registration, we monitor compliance by checking that they have done at least one of the following:

  • passed the exam
  • passed the workplace assessment
  • met the requirements for fellowship with a specialist college.
