Principles to strengthen the involvement of consumers in accreditation

The independently-chaired Accreditation Committee (the committee) has published its Principles to strengthen the involvement of consumers in accreditation (the principles).

The principles aim to support diversity of input into accreditation activities across the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (National Scheme).

Accreditation Committee Chair, Professor Andrew Wilson AO, said 'strengthening meaningful involvement of consumers will enhance accreditation processes'.

‘By involving consumers early in the accreditation process, we ensure outcomes are fit-for-purpose and meet the needs of the community.’

Meaningful consumer involvement requires that consumers are listened to, treated as equals, involved in final decision making, and have their opinions considered and acted upon.

‘The consumer voice is paramount to the design and delivery of accreditation functions, with the aim to improve patient safety’ Professor Wilson AO said.

The committee would like to thank stakeholders who participated in the consultation process for the development of the principles.

About the committee

The committee was established in 2021, consistent with Ministerial Council Policy Direction 2020-1 – Independent Accreditation Committee. The committee gives independent and expert advice on accreditation reform and other National Scheme accreditation matters to National Boards, accreditation authorities and Ahpra.
