Paramedics are set to renew their registration for the first time since paramedicine became a nationally regulated health profession on 30 November 2018.
First in line to renew was Mr Jarrod Wakeling who graduated as a qualified Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance Paramedic with Ambulance Victoria on 3 September 2015. He renewed his registration with the Paramedicine Board of Australia (the Board) last month and it is now on the national online Register of practitioners.
‘I was online to check my CPD requirements and saw that the online renewal process was open. I was pleasantly surprised when I got the call to say I was the first ever paramedic to renew in the National Scheme ,’ Jarrod said.
Jarrod’s interest in science, anatomy and physiology drew him to paramedicine. He was also interested in the practical aspects of the job.
‘I’ve seen first-hand the impact paramedics can have on patients, families and bystanders during their time of need. I find this extremely rewarding,’ Jarrod said.
‘This is why I have been a Paramedic for 12 years and I have no plans to do anything else.’
Ahead of the one-year anniversary, Paramedicine Board Chair, Associate Professor Stephen Gough ASM reflected on paramedicine’s first year as a regulated profession under the National Scheme.
‘I would like to congratulate all those paramedics who have renewed their registration already and all the other paramedics around Australia who are currently in the process of renewing their registration,’ Stephen Gough said.
‘A significant amount of work was required to achieve the registration of paramedics. More than 18,000 paramedics currently hold registration with the Board. As we approach one year of regulation, I acknowledge with gratitude the collective work of the many who have been involved in achieving this milestone.’
Once registered, paramedics can practise anywhere in Australia and use the protected title ‘paramedic’.
Members of the public can check the registration status of Australia’s registered health workforce using the national online Register of practitioners, with details of registered practitioners updated several times each day across Australia. The national register is a great resource to help keep the public safe.
